In this session, we will continue to look at Proverbs Chapter Eight. As we reach these verses, we can see that the personification of Wisdom is a clear reflection of the Lord Jesus Christ.
Proverbs 8:8-12 – “8 All the utterances of my mouth are in righteousness; There is nothing crooked or perverted in them. 9 They are all straightforward to him who understands, and right to those who find knowledge. 10 Take my instruction and not silver, And knowledge rather than choicest gold. 11 For wisdom is better than jewels; And all desirable things cannot compare with her. 12 I, wisdom, dwell with prudence, and I find knowledge and discretion.”
From the comments so far, the Book of Proverbs shows that Wisdom is a straight shooter. All her words are plain, and she excludes nothing. She says what she means and means what she says. No one who follows her advice will ever be trapped or deceived. This stands in sharp contrast to the perverse and deceitful words of wicked people and the immoral woman (5:3; 7:21). Wisdom has some hard things to say and some uncomfortable truths to tell, and she constantly calls us to self-discipline rather than self-indulgence. The way she calls us to walk is faultless and flawless.
The things revealed are readily known, for they have been written for us to lay hold of and are witnessed by the work of Creation (Psalms 29:11, 19:10). As stated earlier, Wisdom cries aloud in the streets, reflecting a fervent desire to be heard.
Speaking of this, the POSB commentary says,
Jesus Christ is the Word of God, the logos. He is the full expression, full communication, and full revelation of all that God is, and all that God says. The description of wisdom’s words in this passage can be applied not only to the written record—God’s inspired Word, the Bible—but also to God’s living Word, His Son Jesus Christ. Christ is all these things: excellence, righteousness, truth. There was no guile—no deceit or wickedness—in His mouth. Nothing in His holy life was twisted or perverse. He is completely faithful, reliable, and trustworthy [and is available to all who call on Him].
All those who have been born again will testify that Jesus Christ is the most valuable treasure in our lives. But if we choose to walk with Him, we not only accept the blessings and freedom He brings but also the reproof, chastisement, and correction that come through discipline. In other words, if we choose to follow Him, we need to understand how He works with us, and that is not always easy.
There will be times when we must undergo the unpleasant and sometimes painful correction of our sinful desires (nature). At times, our desires must be afflicted or disturbed before we are open to receiving correction for them. However, if we have the insight to recognise, analyse, and understand these situations, we are able to make good judgments and decisions (1:4, 7). When we obtain the knowledge of GOD in Christ, then we find that all the promises of God are right-yea and amen.
Chapter Eight goes on to a great rundown of the value of Wisdom. It says she was present at the Creation and works with the Creator (8:22-31). God approves of those who listen to Wisdom’s counsel (8:32-35). Those who hate wisdom love death (8:36). Wisdom should affect every aspect of one’s life, from beginning to end. When a person gains knowledge of themselves, they will see that all the restraints of God are for their own best interests.
However, to fully embrace all these benefits, we must be dead to the wealth of this world, so that we may more closely and earnestly apply ourselves to the business of walking in the gift of Wisdom. We must make instruction the main matter, and then be indifferent whether we receive silver or not. We must not allow it to be our portion and reward, as the rich man in his lifetime received his good things.
May God bless you.
