Finding God in Persecution and Sufferingby Bruce Billington

Persecution and Boldly Proclaiming the Gospel
This message was requested initially because our dear brothers and sisters in India are facing physical persecution from other religious sects. Of course, not all believers face severe legal or physical persecution for their faith. Many of us don’t live under the threat of being beaten or taken to court for preaching the gospel. However, many places around the globe currently experience persecution as a daily reality for believers. So, what should our response be when any persecution or suffering comes upon us? Psalms 46:1 - "God is our refuge and strength, A very present help in trouble." The Lord stands with His people and is greater than any external power. We must embrace this truth and declare that “He is my refuge and strength.” We must never forget that God is our refuge now, just as much as when David wrote this word. God alone is our all-in-all. He will never leave us or forsake us. He never withdraws Himself from any of His afflicted. He is their help—truly, effectively, and constantly present; He is near, close at their side, ready to comfort them. He is closer to us than any friend or relative can be. His assistance always comes at the needed time. In Acts 4 - Peter and John were arrested for preaching the gospel and healing a man who had been crippled from birth. The next day, they were brought before the Jewish leaders—an elite group of priests, scribes, and elders who likely viewed the apostles as nothing more than troublemakers threatening their authority with the story of a resurrected Christ. In verse 7, they insisted that these are held accountable for their teaching.
Find Strength in the Holy Spirit
Acts 4:8 tells us that Peter was filled with the Holy Spirit. This highlights something every believer needs during times of persecution. We can find strength only in the Holy Spirit. So, what does it mean to be filled with the Holy Spirit? It means we can set aside our own will, wisdom, and strength to rely on God. It’s both expecting and allowing the power of God to work in us through His Spirit. Now, this is not just a trance-like experience. Our minds are fully engaged, yet they are surrendered to the Lord. In 2 Corinthians 12:10, Paul says, "Therefore I am well content with weaknesses, with insults, with distresses, with persecutions, with difficulties, for Christ’s sake; for when I am weak, then I am strong." In the face of persecution or suffering, we may feel unprepared, overwhelmed, and outmatched. However, in those moments, we must remember that God uses our weakness to demonstrate His strength.
Finding Strength in God During Persecution
The Bible reminds us in 2 Timothy 3:12 that "all that will live godly in Christ Jesus shall suffer persecution." This indicates that persecution is an inevitable reality for those who choose to live a godly life. It serves as a solemn reminder that faithfulness to God's Word may provoke opposition from those who do not share our beliefs or feel threatened by the gospel. However, despite the prevalence of persecution and suffering, the Bible assures us that such times serve a greater purpose in the lives of believers. In Matthew 5:10-12, Jesus teaches, "Blessed are they which are persecuted for righteousness sake; for theirs is the kingdom of heaven... Rejoice, and be exceeding glad; for great is your reward in heaven." Though often painful and challenging, any form of persecution or suffering presents us with an opportunity to demonstrate our unwavering faith and commitment to Christ. It refines our character, deepens our reliance on God, and strengthens our resolve to follow Him, even in adversity.
God’s Grace and Mercy
We cope with persecution and suffering through God’s grace and mercy. One of the foundational principles of tapping into God's mercy is found in Hebrews 4:16, which encourages us to "come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need." Through prayer, we can confidently approach the throne of God. By pouring our hearts out before Him, we acknowledge our dependence on His mercy and invite His divine intervention into our circumstances.
Encourage One Another
1 Thessalonians 5:11 – "Therefore, encourage one another and build up one another, just as you also are doing." In times like these, we must not stand alone; we must stand together and watch over one another. We should join in prayer and praise with one another. It is the duty of those, especially those who live in the same vicinity or family, to comfort and uplift each other. Matthew 18:20 - “For where two or three have gathered together in My name,  I am there in their midst.”
The Strength of God's Love in Overcoming Persecution
A key benefit of knowing and feeling God's love is the assurance of His faithfulness and presence in our lives. Romans 8:38-39 - "For I am persuaded that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord."  No matter the intensity of persecution or suffering we encounter, God's love remains unshakeable and constant. It provides us with unwavering assurance that we are never alone, and His love empowers us to endure and overcome. God's love brings a deep sense of security and belonging. As we embrace God's love, we enter into a divine union, finding rest in His embrace. This profound connection provides a strong sense of identity and purpose, assuring us that we are beloved children of God, regardless of the persecution or suffering we may face. 1 Corinthians 10:13 - "No temptation has overtaken you but such as is common to man; and God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will provide the way of escape also, so that you will be able to endure it." God knew that whatever we were going through was coming, and He fiercely guards us, ensuring that we may either escape the situation or that He would empower us to endure it and gain maturity in Him as a result. He always causes it to work together for good for us (Romans 8:28).
The Power of Prayer During Persecution
Prayer is essential during persecution because it enables us to express our fears, anxieties, and burdens before God. Philippians 4:6-7 - "6 Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all comprehension, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus." Through prayer, we present our concerns and struggles to God, placing them in His capable hands and experiencing the peace that surpasses human understanding. During times of persecution or suffering, prayer offers us a direct line of communication with God, enabling us to seek His guidance, wisdom, and direction. Through prayer, we can seek God's discernment and understanding in challenging circumstances, trusting that He will provide us with the wisdom and guidance needed to navigate the trials of persecution and suffering. Prayer becomes a powerful weapon against discouragement, strengthening us and reminding us of our Heavenly Father's faithfulness. We can pray for boldness to stand firm in our faith, for strength to endure, for wisdom in responding to persecution, and for God's miraculous intervention in the lives of those affected by such times.
Trusting God Amid Persecution
Trusting God during times of persecution is crucial because it enables us to find strength, hope, and assurance in His unfailing love and sovereignty. When we trust God, we surrender our fears and anxieties to Him, recognising that He controls every situation. Proverbs 3:5-6 - "5 Trust in the LORD with all your heart and do not lean on your own understanding. 6 - In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make your paths straight." By trusting in God, we allow Him to guide us along the path He has set before us, even in the face of persecution. He reassures us of His faithfulness and provision. Psalm 37:5 - "Commit our way unto the LORD; trust also in him; and he shall bring it to pass." Trusting in God helps us let go of worry and doubt while gaining confidence that He will care for us and fulfil our needs. We can use these moments to build a deeper relationship with Him through prayer, meditating on His Word, surrendering our fears and concerns to Him, and standing together with our brothers and sisters in Christ. Jesus said – These things I have spoken to you, so that in Me you may have peace. In the world, you have tribulation, but take courage; I have overcome the world.” (John 16:33). God bless you.
