Review Written by David Holmyard (2025)

It is an absolute joy for me to introduce you to one of the most pivotal books in Natalie and my Christian Walk, certainly in the top 5 of “small books that help explain the big book”.  I cannot tell you when we first read this book – approx. 25 years ago, and when I re-read it again last year, I could not put it down – it is so good we are reading this as an extended family this year.

There are truths and wisdom on every page that, if you take time to meditate on and let the Holy Spirit renew your mind, your life will never be the same.  Francis writes in a style that appeals to me, with very short chapters packed with scripture and insight.  He challenges the reader to “real honest evaluation of “where they are in their relationship with Father”, but he does not leave you in evaluation, he provides practical suggestions that, if followed, will grow your desire and relationship with God in a way that is real.

As you read this book and confront some uncomfortable truths, I would like to encourage you to remember some important truths.

  • Romans 8:1“Therefore, there is now no condemnation at all for those who are in Christ Jesus.”
    • When we confront the truth, it should convict us and lead us to repent for our “flesh nature” and “misalignment with God’s ways, truth and life’          but this should never lead to guilt, shame or condemnation.  If it does, this is not the work of the Holy Spirit, and you should reject those thoughts immediately
  • 2 Corinthians 3:18“But we all, with unveiled faces, looking as in a mirror at the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from glory to glory, just as from the Lord, the Spirit”
    • Paul is very clear we are being transformed from glory to glory – the Holy Spirit is working within us, and if we remain humble,             obedient and teachable, then we can and will live a life of freedom.

It is far too easy to be self-critical and reading a book like this we can be left feeling defeated, but the truth is God delights in us and he is in our hearts and the fact that we read a book like this and are convicted and repent proves that “we are being transformed from glory to glory” and we should rejoice in this knowledge.

Next time we see each other, tell me about your experience in reading this wonderful book

God bless,

David
